What is Career Coaching?

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is career coaching?

The role of career coaching is to help you succeed. It is about enabling you to establish goals, discover solutions to the challenges you face, achieve results and pursue a fantastic career. To facilitate the process, the coach supports, motivates and challenges you by creating a conversation using a combination of skills such as observation, questioning and feedback. Ultimately, you will be helped to build your self-awareness, explore career and development opportunities and bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be, more quickly and easily than doing it alone.

How does career coaching differ from career advice, mentoring or therapy?

Coaching is not about giving advice or helping you to cope with a crisis or explore issues from your past. It is about looking to the future. During the coaching sessions, the coach will facilitate your thought process and suggest options to help you to improve your situation by creating new possibilities and opportunities.

What happens in a typical session?

During a typical session, the coach will explore your current issues with you and enable you to identify your desired situation and formulate personal goals in line with this. The coach will then explore what challenges need to be overcome and what obstacles are in the way. The final step is to investigate the options available and put a plan of action into place to enable you to achieve your goal.

Are there activities for me to do between each session?

Yes, for coaching to be effective you will need to complete actions between the sessions so that you can put your coaching session discussions into action and move closer towards achieving your goal.

Does it matter where I live?

No, coaching can also take place by telephone or Skype.  Tessa Armstrong works with people successfully all over the UK and abroad.

What does a coaching programme consist of?

Coaching takes place during regular sessions in person, by telephone or on Teams. These will be confidential and usually scheduled weekly or fortnightly. A typical career coaching programme consists of 4-8 sessions of 1 hour. Shorter and longer term programmes are also available and we will of course discuss your individual requirements with you so that you are able to choose a programme that best suits you. There will also be the opportunity for email contact between the sessions.
